Hi, I'm Sam.
I'm a Product guy and I believe creating value is part of every role in an organisation and anyone can learn the basics of a repeatable product practices. If more people develop their product thinking, we'll have more diversity in how we approach problems and this can lead to solving things in innovative and truly impactful ways.
With over 15 years experience building products for customers across the globe, I’m a results driven Product Leader who embraces an entrepreneurial spirit, balanced with the practicalities of ‘getting it done’. Beyond building products where I can, I enjoy learning how to challenge, support and help folks figure out how to become the version of themselves they aspire to be.
For me, a great day involves understanding customers a little more, coaching future Product Leaders, working with cross functional teams to 'ship it', sharing stories about strategy and vision and utilising data to pull it all together and identify the next great opportunities.
In case it wasn't obvious, I believe building products customers love is a team sport and everyday is an opportunity to learn.
I believe leadership in Product Management starts with curiosity and a healthy dose of humility. Product people must first serve the customer and serve in a way that also works for the organisation and its people. Done well, Product translates the long-term business ambition and direction to the day to day decision making and process at a team level. Product serves the team by providing clarity of direction, serves the business by validating impact with data insight and ultimately the customer by providing products or services they care enough about to use.
My Product practice is grounded by a desire for continuous improvement and enhanced by surrounding myself with high performing teams, that I can help grow while tackling big opportunities.
As a leader, I believe the three most important questions a team needs answered each day are:
what are the expectations of the team and of me, as a team member?
how are we and how am I performing against those expectations?
what does my future look like with this organisation?
I also do freelance Product Management / Strategy consulting with a very limited number of local small businesses, socially minded enterprises and entrepreneurs.
The best place to start is research and asking yourself questions:
Why do I want a job in Product?
What skills does a product manager need to add value to an organisation?
(hot tip: the internet is FULL of ideas here. Or feel free to peruse my thoughts on a Skills Framework for Product Managers)
What are my skill gaps? (Your reality)
How can I get experience? (Your options)
What's my plan to land a role? (Your way forward)
It might seem a little daunting....but guess what! By working through this list you are practising some of the fundamental tasks in product - set a goal, research, formulate a plan and deliver a great outcome.
I'm also available to hire as a Product Coach if this is more your style. Just reach out.
