Working all day with incredibly talented and driven folks is one of the many perks of a Product Management role. It's also super rare to have two days that look the same and while the ambiguity and uncertainty can seem overwhelming from the outside, the variety of experience on offer - across business size, business phase, projects, industries, tech stack and location (plus more) - provides for amazing employment opportunities. I'm fortunate and very grateful to have somehow found my way into the roles
I'm also big on exploring ideas. Sometimes however, it's just not practical (or even possible) to try ideas in your primary employment - and this is not a bad thing...it just is.
This is where the value of a strategic side gig shines. Strategic side projects outside of your day job can provide an opportunity develop new skills, keep sharp, meet and work with other interesting folks, find space for thinking and reflection and side projects can even be used to give back.
Side projects don't have to be a "Plan B" or "unicorn" ideas. For me, they can be hobbies, additional income streams and best of all - they push me forward and provide experience and learnings I can't get on the clock and will make me better at my job.
